Free AI plans shifted a lot this fall. Since October 8, ChatGPT’s free users get GPT-6 Luna. Since September 28, Claude has offered its new Sonnet 5.5 without a subscription. Google went the other way: on October 9 it tightened Gemini’s free tier, and only the Flash-Lite model is left for people who don’t pay.
We lined up the ten most useful free AI assistants as they stood on October 12, 2026, and looked at what really matters: the model you actually get for free, the limits, whether you have to create an account, and what each one does with your data.
Full disclosure: NowAskAI, the site you’re reading this on, is in this ranking. It’s our product. We put it where we think it belongs, and we list its limits just as we do for everyone else.
How we ranked these free AI chatbots
We only looked at the free version of each assistant, leaving out anything reserved for paying subscribers. Four things counted:
- How good the free model is, not how good the company’s best model is.
- How generous the limits are: messages, images, files, web search.
- Whether you can use it without creating an account.
- How it handles your personal data (where it’s stored, and under which laws).

1. ChatGPT: the most complete free assistant
ChatGPT is still the one to beat. Since August 2026, OpenAI no longer caps the number of text messages on free accounts, and since October 8 those messages go through GPT-6 Luna, the lighter version of its new generation. Paying subscribers get the more powerful GPT-6 Sol.
The free plan also includes web search, file and image uploads, image generation and voice, with tighter quotas than for subscribers. OpenAI doesn’t publish all of those quotas. You can use it without an account, but chat history, voice and custom instructions require you to sign up.
- Pros: no cap on text messages, a wide range of tools, polished apps.
- Cons: image and file quotas aren’t published, and the best model is still paid.
2. Claude: the best for writing and reasoning
Since September 28, 2026, Anthropic has given free Claude accounts its Sonnet 5.5 model, on the web and in the apps. It’s one of the best models around for writing, summarizing a long document or following a multi-step argument.
The catch is the limits. They reset every few hours and depend on how long your conversations are and how busy the servers are, so a long document or a marathon chat burns through them quickly. The most powerful model, Opus 5.5, is for subscribers only. You need an account.
- Pros: quality of writing, long documents.
- Cons: limits you hit quickly, account required.
3. Gemini: handy if you live in Google
Until recently, Gemini had the most generous free plan of the big players. Since October 9, 2026, people without a subscription only get Flash-Lite, the lightest model in the lineup; Flash and Pro now require a Google AI subscription.
Gemini still has real strengths: its connections to Gmail, Docs, Drive and Google Search, and features like image generation. You can try it on the website without signing in, but with a single model and no file uploads; the mobile app requires a Google account.
- Pros: Google integration, free with no credit card.
- Cons: only Flash-Lite since October 9, unpublished quotas.
4. Vibe (formerly Le Chat): Mistral’s European AI
Mistral AI renamed Le Chat to Vibe in May 2026 without changing its plans. It’s the strongest European alternative: a French company, with your data handled under European law.
The free version includes web search, image generation, document analysis and building agents. Volume is limited, though: on the order of a few dozen messages a day according to published tests, since Mistral gives no official number. You need a free account.
- Pros: European company, European data laws.
- Cons: small daily volume, account required.
5. Microsoft Copilot: the AI already on your PC
Copilot runs on OpenAI’s models and Bing search. It’s free on copilot.microsoft.com, in Windows and in the Edge browser, and you can even ask a quick question without a Microsoft account.
Microsoft describes free use as “subject to available capacity,” with no exact figure. And since April 2026, Copilot is no longer free inside Word, Excel and PowerPoint: that takes a Microsoft 365 Copilot license.
- Pros: already on Windows, built-in web search, no account needed.
- Cons: unpublished limits, no longer free inside Office.
6. NowAskAI: ask right away, no sign-up (our product)
NowAskAI is our site. It runs right in your browser with no account, no email and no credit card: you get free messages every day, answered in clear English by NowAskAI’s own model, the same one for every visitor. It isn’t ChatGPT and has no ties to OpenAI.
Its limits are real. Image generation and file handling are limited on the free plan, and the big-name models are for subscribers, all in one chat: GPT-6 Luna with Essential ($6.99€6.99 a month); Gemini 3.8 Flash, Grok 4.7 and Claude Sonnet 5.5 added with Premium ($9.99€9.99 a month); and Claude Opus 5.5 with Pro ($19.99€19.99 a month). If you just want to ask a question in plain English, right now and without signing up, that’s exactly what we built it for.
- Pros: no account, nothing to install, several AIs in one place for subscribers.
- Cons: images and files limited on the free plan, the best-known models are paid.
7. Perplexity: for searching with sources
Perplexity is less a chat assistant than an answer engine: every reply cites the pages it came from, which makes it the most reliable tool for checking a fact or doing quick research.
The free version doesn’t count basic searches, which run on its in-house Sonar model, and adds a few in-depth (“Pro”) searches a day. It works without an account. For writing anything long, the assistants higher up this list do better.
- Pros: cited sources, basic searches not counted, no account.
- Cons: weaker at writing, in-depth searches are limited.
8. DeepSeek: powerful, but your data goes to China
DeepSeek, a Chinese company, offers its DeepSeek V4 model for free. It’s very good at reasoning, math and code, and its models are open source, so you can also run them on your own machine.
But the app and the website process your messages on servers in China, under Chinese law. Several European data protection authorities have challenged it: Italy had it pulled from app stores in 2025, and Berlin’s data protection commissioner ruled the transfer of that data to China unlawful. Avoid it for anything personal or work-related.
- Pros: very capable model, free, open models.
- Cons: data stored in China, challenged in Europe, account required.
9. Grok: for following the news on X
Grok, from xAI, is free on grok.com and in the X app with a basic account. Its main draw is live access to posts on X, which helps when you’re following a breaking story.
The free plan shrank in 2026: the newest model is for subscribers, image and video generation are no longer free, and users report roughly ten messages every two hours, since xAI publishes no figure.
- Pros: real-time news thanks to X.
- Cons: tight, unpublished limits, the best model is paid.
10. Meta AI: the AI already in WhatsApp
Meta AI is built into WhatsApp, Instagram, Messenger and Facebook at no cost. There’s no app to install: you message it like any other contact.
It’s handy for a quick question, but it’s more limited than dedicated assistants when it comes to writing or analyzing a document. Your conversations go through Meta’s services, which is worth keeping in mind for sensitive topics.
- Pros: nothing to install, right there in WhatsApp.
- Cons: less capable for long tasks, Meta’s ecosystem.
Which free AI should you choose?
There’s no single best free AI, only the best one for what you want to do:
- To do a bit of everything with one tool: ChatGPT.
- To write, summarize or analyze a long text: Claude.
- To keep your data in Europe: Vibe by Mistral.
- To check a fact against its sources: Perplexity.
- For a quick question without creating an account: NowAskAI or Copilot.
- If you already live in Gmail and Google Docs: Gemini.
What “free” really means
A free AI still comes with trade-offs. Companies cap your usage, keep their best models for subscribers, and may use your conversations to improve their services. Check each tool’s privacy settings, and never share sensitive information (health details, bank details, passwords) with any assistant, whichever one it is.
Free plans also change fast: within two weeks, ChatGPT and Claude both improved their free versions while Gemini cut back its own. We’ll update this comparison whenever something important changes.
Frequently asked questions
What is the best free AI in 2026?
